Therapy with Mindfulness, somatic therapy, transpersonal in Denver, CO.

➤ You use terms like mindfulness, somatic and transpersonal when referring to your therapeutic approaches. Can you tell me more about what these terms mean?

Absolutely! One thing I’d like to first point out though is that not all of these approaches will show up in every session and with every client. We can discuss any of this further on a free consultation call (or feel free to email me!).

Speaking of a consultation call, if you choose to connect with me you’ll most likely hear me say that mindfulness is the foundation of my work. So what is it? I tend to define mindfulness as a non-judgmental awareness of the present moment including thoughts, feelings, sounds, and sensations. It’s the practice of staying present in the moment and not judging whatever comes up for you. In session this looks like me guiding you with techniques that help you sharpen your consciousness and ground you. The intention here being to help you gently return your attention back to the present moment whenever your mind starts to spiral or wander.

Somatic therapy views the mind and body as one. It’s based on the belief that often the body will let us know what is happening within us before the mind comprehends. Traditional talk therapy tends to start at the top—in the mind—and analyzes what’s happening there first. Whereas somatic therapy takes a bottom-up processing approach, beginning lower—in the body. We work to build your awareness of the sensations happening in real-time within your body, and then travel up to the mind to make meaning of what occurs for you.

In a session this would look like me pointing out changes in your body language, or you identifying sensations within you as you share certain thoughts and experiences. These physical sensations could include things like a change in your facial expression, impulses to move, heavy emotion, a shift in your posture, or tightening of your shoulders or throat. As we identify these shifts we’ll explore potential meanings behind them as well as try on different techniques for you to use to help calm your body in the moment.

Transpersonal simply means beyond the personal and explores the interplay of spirituality, the soul, and human transformation. If you’re someone who believes in a higher power and are open to integrating your spiritual beliefs into your healing then we can journey through this together in session. And if you’re not, then we won’t. No pressure.
